Voice Assistants for Mobile
We will focuse on the mobile use of voice assistants first, as they have been leading the development for a while now.
Taking a look at the actual numbers of their use reveals some intriguing results. When it comes to mobile application, Siri is quite far ahead with its usage numbers.
Apple’s voice assistant was the first one to be integrated into smartphones and remains in the leading position because of this fact alone. At 46% market share, it is ahead by a factor of x 1.5 compared to Google Assistant.
Amazon’s Alexa ranks third followed by Samsung’s Bixby and Microsoft’s Cortana. The last two not really being strong contenders as it appears right now.
The popularity of the leading three voice assistants is directly correlated to their hardware implementation. All three of them can be used with unique smart speakers that allow for a multitude of commands and applications. These speakers can be put up at home and are used to execute voice commands.
The Top Three Voice Assistants
We are going to focus on the leading three voice assistants: Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple’s Siri.
Intelligent and correct, these words do well in describing Google’s voice assistant. Google Assistant answers questions better and is right more often than its competing voice assistants. Additionally, the Google Home Speaker can process two tasks at once. A feature Alexa and Siri are still struggling with.
However, it is not able to deliver the same depth of applications that Alexa is featuring, but more and more apps are coming. The “routine” feature that allows Alexa to run multiple tasks based on one command will soon be available for Google Assistant as well. With this, you can say: “Hey Google – Good Morning” and the light will turn on, a weather forecast is read out to you, and after that, your favourite music will play automatically.
Compatibility is another critical aspect that Google focuses on with its assistant. This enables communication with other devices such as fridges and smart displays. Google being Google and having access to the vast amounts of user data, will make sure that the assistant has the most advanced information available.
Alexa is very good at answering general questions and tackling simple tasks like calendar entries, phone calls or playing music.
Amazon’s voice assistant can play out its strength when it comes to the use of apps called “skills”. These enable Amazon’s smart speaker ‘Echo’ to become a multi-talented device. These skills allow for ordering taxis, shopping or a lovely guided meditation.
Right now Alexa is still featuring the best compatibility with other devices and is, therefore, a perfect solution for a smart home environment. The direct connection to Amazon’s shopping portal makes ordering a breeze and helps with finding sales and promotions.
As usual, Apple does its own thing. With voice assistants there is no difference. Siri works especially well when combined with Apple’s other products and services. Whoever owns Apple products already can make good use of Siri and the Apple HomeKit.
Apple places emphasis on quality and functionality. For this very reason, Siri’s capabilities are a bit more limited, yet they work exceptionally well and smoothly.
Another advantage of Siri is its wide range of possible languages. As of now, 20 different languages are available on the mobile version which trumps Google and Amazon with 8 languages respectively. But, it has to me mentioned that when it comes to the HomePod it is only able to work with English.
Users of Siri could run into a few problems when it comes to apps such as Spotify or Pandora as these are not featured with Siri, because Apple prefers to push its own eco-systems.
Voice assistants have been one of the most significant technological developments for the past years. The big players in the world of technology are at cutting edge of this technology and are offering the best solutions for voice assistants.
